Quick Overview

The Makoka Valley Estate was first planted in 1979 in the Southern Thyolo district of Malawi, near to Zomba. Growing conditions are ideal for specialty coffee, with altitudes of around 3000 to 3400ft and terrain of rolling hills and valleys.

This is a wonderful, fully washed Malawi coffee. It has a crisp acidity with chocolate and raisin notes. There is a rich body, classic to East African coffees, and sweet finish. Coffees from Malawi are criminally underrated - if you like other coffees from the region (Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya etc) then do give this a try. We like supporting the great coffee coming from this disadvantaged country.

Product Description

The Makoka Valley Estate was first planted in 1979 in the Southern Thyolo district of Malawi, near to Zomba. Growing conditions are ideal for specialty coffee, with altitudes of around 3000 to 3400ft and terrain of rolling hills and valleys. Aptly the name "Makoka" comes from the Makoka River, which borders the southwest of the farm, the name (Makoka) is derived from the local "Chichewa" phrase 'ku koka' meaning 'to pull', referring to the abundance of fish in the river.

The coffee is handpicked with only the ripe cherries chosen, they are transported to the washing station where they are sorted, pulped, washed and dried on raised African beds.

The speciality world has started to take note of Malawi, and their coffees are slowly getting the recognition they deserve. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world with its economy based largely on agriculture, accounting for 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings, 40 percent of its GDP, and employs 80 percent of the workforce (Source: UN report 2005).
