We were sent a sample of this coffee and we were all blown away with just how delicious it was. Before knowing anything about this coffee we snapped some up only to find that this Peru Tunki is a winner of a number of awards from the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America).
This Peru Tunki Mayo coffee is produced in the valley of Sandia in the southeast, Puno region. Wilson Sucaticona and his wife, Luz Celia, named their coffee 'Tunki' in memory of a bird that translates as, 'The Cockerel of the Rocks' (Rupicula Peruviana). This special bird is protected by the members of the cooperative CERCOVASA, a renowned cooperative run by the indigenous people that farms in the area.
The coffee is grown at around 1,300 to 1,800 meters above sea level. The farm is certified orgainic in the US.
We feel this coffee works on a number of levels. Not only does this coffee have a floral brightness with a lovely acidity but it has a smooth mouthfeel giving it such a well-rounded and complete cup, which tends to be unusual for coffees from this region.
