Nicarague Siares Estate - 500g
The Siares Estate is located in Matagalpa, central Nicaragua, at 1,000 m (3,280 feet) above sea level. Covered in over 1000 walnut trees, it is the latest addition to an impressive portfolio of high quality farms owned by third generation coffee farmers, the Bendaña McEwans, whose other properties include Los Altos, El Quetzal and El Limoncillo. Francisco Bendaña’s mother, Maria Teresa McEwan de Bendaña bought the estate in 2007 from Cuadra Somarriba family, who had farmed at Siares for 60 years. By the time Maria bought Siares, the farm had been semi-abandoned and is currently undergoing an intensive programme of pruning and renovation. Under Francisco’s management, a plantation on Siares, “El Guaval”, which is next to the main water source and the primary forest at the highest part of the property, came third in the 2008 Cup of Excellence. The Siares Estate had twice before been a winner in the Cup of Excellence (14th place in 2002 & 11th place in 2007). Its coffee has always been washed with natural spring water and fermented for 36 hours. This year the drying process was done at Beneficio La Pita on special raised drying beds under the sun, which allows for a slower and more homogeneous dry and even blueish colour. It is cupped and selected at least four times by a team of three International Cup of Excellence jury cuppers that work at the mill. Price shown per 500g.
