This Sumatra Blue Batak is a top grade Indonesian. It's got your big body that you'd expect from a cracking Sumatra. There's also a sweet syrupy mouthfeel which is unusual for coffees from the region, but most welcomed, and a herbal character in the cup. We're roasting this at around a medium roast, great Espresso & brewed coffee, but those Home Roasters might like to take this slightly higher if that is a personal preference.
Blue Batak is sourced from the Lingtong region of Northern Sumatra, situated on the Southern tip of the beautiful Lake Toba. Lake Toba is the largest volcanic crater lake in the world. For decades, coffee has been grown around the Lake by the indigenous Batak tribe, who have lived in this area since the 13th Century. Hence the nod to them in the name, 'Blue Batak'.
This coffee is grown at around 1400 - 1600 m.a.s.l. and is from a number of small-holder farmers with the average size of their farms being up to 2 hectares. The varietals are Sigarar Utang/Ateng and are fully washed. This microlot is specifically from the Huta Village farmers, where the levels of agronomy and quality is improving ever year.
