The Mugonero washing station is located in the Nyamasheke district, Western province, around 4 hours drive from Kingali. The station is at 1800m.a.s.l in the mountains to the east of Lake Kivu, close to the Democratic Republic of Congo border to the west. The region is known for its beautiful rolling mountains and tropical climate - providing consistent high altitude, plentiful rainfall and fertile soil - all key ingredients for top grade specialty coffee production.
The washing station collects cherries from around 2,000 local smallholder farmers. It has 7 fermentation tanks & around 70 drying beds. The Farmers receive a premium price for their high quality cherries, as well as a bonus once the coffee is processed, graded & sold.
Processing begins when the farmers deliver their ripe, hand picked cherries to the mill for sorting. Damaged & unripe cherries are hand sorted and discarded. The ripe cherries are floated to get rid of any floating cherries, then pulped & fermented in water for 24hrs. Once the sugary mucilage has broken sufficiently the coffee is washed and grade in clean water channels, before being dried in the sun on raised African beds for an average of 16 days. After drying the coffee is then bagged and rested for 1-2months in a cool, dry environment.
This Rwanda Mugonero lot is made up 100% of the Bourbon varietal. It is fully washed and has a distinct blackberry character with notes of elderflower & crisp acidity. There is a smooth, sweet finish with a very moreish mouthfeel. Silky coffee.
